Emma had the experience of a lifetime on Opening Day on Monday, April 5 - she was down on the field at Minute Maid Park and prior to the first pitch of the Astros - Giants game she was up on the Jumbotron and into a microphone screamed "Let's Play Ball!" as part of the "Luby's Kids First Call." The video I took with my camera is on the right.
What an experience and she did AWESOME!! Way to go girl!! Anyone who knows Em knows she loves to sing, perform and is the ultimate drama queen, yet "performing" in front of a packed house is a bit different. Matt went down with her (they were escorted by Astros personnel) and even said he was a bit nervous on whether or not she'd screw up. I mean, even if she did - would people be that upset about a kid having a bit of stagefright? Nonetheless, Matt said the cameraman and everyone was impressed with how well Em did and how easy she was to work with - and even got her dance done in the first take!
Since it was Opening Day, there were quite a bit of pre-game festivities, so Em got to meet the astronauts from the recent Shuttle STS-130 mission and was super-close to the players. She loved it.
Right before the National Anthem (she was to go on shortly thereafter) Em turned to Matt and said she "had to go pee." Not the best timing. Linda, the Astros escort, said she would take Em up to the Diamond Club (the fancy-schmancy season ticket holders' private area behind home plate) but that they had to be quick. Well, they get up to the Diamond Club but weren't allowed in and had to wait until the Secret Service cleared President Bush (Sr.) out, as he and former First Lady Barbara were in there (they attend nearly every Astros home game). By the time she got to go do her duty, it was REALLY cutting it close on time and they literally had to run down the tunnel from the Diamond Club to the field!
Getting prepped
It was also Katie's first big league game and she LOVED it and had a blast! Here the girls watch batting practice, and Katie was just enthralled.
We took the girls over to the Squeeze Play area (a huge play area for the kids) and unfortunately missed Em's mug up on the Jumbotron leading the stadium in "The Robot" dance, but the Astros are going to send us a DVD of everything so we'll at least have a copy. I had a few friends tell me they saw it and she was great and so cute.
